First Energy Corporation - Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station SAPS Facility - Shippingport, PA - 2009 - $1,200,000|
Scope of Work:
The Shippingport Atomic Power Station [SAPS], managed by Duquesne Light Company for the U.S. Department of Energy, terminated operations in 1982 and has since been decommissioned and decontaminated. Demolition of the remaining facility structures is ongoing to comply with NRC and Homeland Security initiatives for nuclear facilities.
The phased demolition includes a Gantry crane, several multi-story structures including the control room, outfall/discharge structures, transformers, boilers, tank cradles, catwalks and other miscellaneous structures. The contaminants of concern include PCBs and asbestos-containing materials.
The demolition is being staged according to site protection priorities and environmental considerations. Phase I includes removal of the Gantry crane, structural steel skeletons for ancillary equipment and miscellaneous line-of-sight structures. Demolition is expected to continue for several years. The demolition debris is being re-used, recycled or salvaged to maximize an environmentally friendly approach to the work.
