Scope of Work:
Neumeyer Environmental was contracted to perform decontamination of a radiological contaminated facility with 54 actuator rod sleeves cast into the walls of a containment scheduled for removal.

Neumeyer Environmental was required to core-drill holes through high-strength concrete to remove the sleeves. Neumeyer Environmental developed a process to collect, filter, and recycle drilling lubricant to reduce the volume required to perform the work. Neumeyer Environmental was able to minimize the amount required to less than five gallons by employing this method. The lubrication equipment was solidified on site. The project involved multiple mixed waste streams, such as radiological contamination, asbestos, mercury, lead, and guano debris.

The project was completed on-time and within budget.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Toll Plaza

Warrendale, PA – 2002 – $155,000

Scope of Work:
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission constructed a new interchange at Warrendale (Milepost #31). An abandoned gasoline station built in the 1950s had occupied part of the construction site. The gas station’s ten gasoline and diesel tanks, ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 gallons capacity, had leaked fuel into the soil. Cleanup was required prior to the beginning of new construction.

Neumeyer Environmental excavated 3,000 tons of contaminated soil and transported it to a thermal processing facility where it was cleaned for recycling for use as roadway subbase on the project. Neumeyer Environmental removed and disposed of 100 tons of hazardous soil, 1,000 gallons of contaminated liquids, and the remnants of the underground fuel system. We also decontaminated and disposed of the old fuel tanks.

Our ability to recycle the contaminated soil substantially reduced our client’s disposal costs. The construction project proceeded on clean land. This project was completed on-schedule and on-budget.

Duquesne Flyover Project

Duquesne, PA – 2008-2009 – $1,200,000

Scope of Work:
The Regional Industrial Development Corporation (RIDC) constructed a roadway to convey traffic over an existing rail line to Duquesne Riverplace at the old Duquesne Works Steel Mill property. The property was approved as an ACT 2 site and is currently under phased redevelopment.

Management of on-site soils required extensive sampling and analysis, use of personal protective equipment, segregation of contaminated materials and removal and management of subsurface debris due to the historical steel-making activities.

Neumeyer Environmental evaluated and managed approximately 40,000 cubic yards of impacted soils in preparation of the more than 3,000 linear feet of road construction. We worked in close coordination with the prime contractor to develop approaches that facilitated project completion and minimized costs.

Neumeyer Environmental performed the earthwork, demolition and on-site placement of surplus materials and debris such that the majority of the materials were able to be beneficially re-used on-site. Remnants of asbestos containing materials were encountered during the excavation that required abatement during portions of the work. Neumeyer Environmental was able to minimize the schedule impacts that may have resulted from this previously-unknown development. The project required approximately 14 months to complete from sampling through final excavation

Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station Demolition

First Energy Corporation
Shippingport, PA – 2005-2006 – $350,000

Scope of Work:
Homeland security regulations required removal of five multi-story office buildings surrounding this nuclear power station in order to open up defensive lines of sight. The buildings were contaminated with asbestos-containing materials and electrical equipment that contained PCBs.

Neumeyer Environmental removed over 2,500 cubic yards of asbestos materials and approximately 250 cubic yards of PCB-containing electrical components. Following removal of these contaminants, Neumeyer Environmental demolished the structures and recycled 1,900 tons of steel and non-ferrous metals. One structure housed a full-scale model breeder reactor, 14′ in diameter and 50′ high, constructed during the 1950s. We constructed a shipping container and relocated the model to a storage facility. The reactor model will be displayed in a museum dedicated to the history of nuclear power.

The renovation and upgrade of the nuclear power facility is an ongoing process due to the magnitude of the work. The project is being performed with a focus on recycling and salvage in support of environmental conservation.

DOD Reactor-Circulating Pump Facility

Westinghouse Corporation

Scope of Work:
A Department of Defense facility managed by Westinghouse Corporation repaired reactor-circulating pumps that were used on nuclear-powered submarines and ships. After years of operation, radiological and asbestos contaminants were present throughout the structure and subsurface soil. This 30,000 square foot building required decontamination prior to its demolition.

The project involved decontamination of the pump repair building, approximately 30,000 square feet. All interior surfaces were decontaminated on-site. After decontamination, the structure was demolished. Approximately 90% of the structural material was recycled after the decontamination process. Contaminated soil beneath the structure was removed and packaged for off-site disposal. The site was backfilled and readied for site restoration.

Recycling of the demolition debris provided significant savings to Westinghouse.
