Asbestos Insulation Abatement

Babcock and Wilcox
Newark, NJ – 1997 – $370,000

Scope of Work:
Neumeyer Environmental was contracted to repair a large utility boiler for a public service electric and gas company. The work required removal and replacement of boiler tubes. Asbestos insulation first needed to be removed in order to access damaged tubes. Approximately 1600 square feet of insulation was initially removed.

Neumeyer Environmental constructed a negative pressure area around the work space on four floors. A heavy steel plate boiler surface skin was removed to expose the asbestos insulation and refractory lining. The asbestos was removed, packaged and shipped off site to a regulated disposal landfill.

The boiler repairs were completed and the boiler was returned on line. The project was completed on-time and on-budget.

Scope of Work:
Construction of a new highway interchange required demolition of two large commercial buildings. One was a metal framework structure covered with 60,000 square feet of asbestos panels; it had been used as a distribution warehouse for industrial rubber products. The second building had housed a sales and processing operation for a water treatment company. In addition to 4,000 square feet of asbestos containing materials (ACM) in floors, roofs, and insulation materials, the building contained 500 tons of hazardous caustics and acids that had been used for water treatment.

At the rubber products warehouse, Neumeyer Environmental coated each asbestos siding panel with encapsulant to seal in any loose asbestos fibers. The 300 pound panels were unbolted, lowered to the ground, wrapped in plastic sheeting and placed in a roll-off containers. The ACM was transported to a regulated facility for disposal. After completion of the abatement, Neumeyer Environmental demolished the building.

In the water treatment building, Neumeyer Environmental drained and flushed all tanks and piping and collected the chemicals in containers provided by the DOT. We shipped the chemicals to a hazardous waste processing facility. Neumeyer Environmental removed and disposed of the ACM from the structure and demolished the building.

Neumeyer Environmental recycled 800 tons of structural steel and provided 3,000 tons of crushed concrete for use as roadway base material.

Memorial Bridge Renovation and Replacement

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure
Arlington, PA – 2009 – $75,000

Scope of Work:
PennDOT replaced and renovated two bridge sections in Connellsville that required construction support. Neumeyer Environmental was contracted to provide construction surveys, methane monitoring and other support activities. We performed the pre-construction survey of six adjacent properties to establish the structural condition before vibrating activities were initiated by the contractor. After the construction is complete, a post-construction survey will be performed to ensure no change occurred during the vibration activities.

Neumeyer Environmental provided real-time field screening and monitoring during drilling activities within the local coal seam that had the potential to generate excessive methane vapors.

Neumeyer Environmental also provided ancillary project support services included providing equipment and analytical services for lead compliance during the bridge deck renovations and removal.
