Metal Fabricator (anonymity requested)
Eastern Ohio, OH – 1997 – $220,000
Scope of Work:
A change in process required an obsolete pre-heat furnace to be removed. The furnace was in the center of an operating facility and was 30 feet wide X 60 feet long X 20 feet high. The furnace was coated with lead-based paint. Asbestos insulation was affixed between the wall and roof of the building, adjacent to the furnace. PCB-containing hydraulic oil had contaminated the foundation beneath the furnace.
Neumeyer Environmental constructed a negative-pressure containment completely around the furnace. The asbestos insulation was removed and the furnace was demolished utilizing cold-cut techniques to prevent lead and PCBs from vaporizing into the atmosphere. Contaminated concrete and soil beneath the furnace was crushed, packaged, and hauled to a regulated landfill with the furnace debris. After the furnace pit was backfilled and a new concrete surface was installed, the area was returned to productive operations.
